Personal Training with Willem in Eltham – Enhance Your Quality of Life

Hi, I’m Willem — a personal trainer based in Eltham with a background in sports science and a focus on helping people feel strong, capable, and confident in their own skin. My mission is simple: to use functional fitness to improve your quality of life.

I work with adults, teens, kids, and neurodivergent clients of all abilities. Whether you're training for performance, pain reduction, mental clarity, or simply to move better day-to-day — I’ll meet you where you're at.

My Training Approach

Training should enhance the way you live. I use strength training, mobility work, movement skill, and conditioning to build systems that support your goals — whatever they may be.

  • One-on-one personal training (in-gym or outdoors)
  • NDIS-supported programs for self- and plan-managed participants
  • Mobile personal training sessions
  • Kids, teens, and women-only options

Carry & Connect

On Sundays, I host a free community session called Carry & Connect — we lift, carry, then sit down for tea and a chat. It’s open to all women, regardless of fitness level or background. It’s not just about training — it’s about connection.

The Podcast

If you're into philosophy, personal growth, or systems thinking — check out my podcast. I talk about everything from martial arts to movement to community.

Willem, a functional fitness coach and personal trainer at Functional Fitness Eltham, specializing in movement training, strength development, and injury prevention

Hi there,

My name is Willem, but most people call me Bear—because, well, I have two modes: teddy bear or grizzly bear.

Getting to know me is easy. I have a deep passion for movement and the ability to adapt and evolve through exposure. That last part has a funny origin story.

Back in the day, I was obsessed with RuneScape (yep, the video game). If you’ve played it, you know it’s all about leveling up skills like woodcutting, archery, and combat, doing quests, and earning better equipment. What hooked me wasn’t just the game itself but the simple yet powerful feedback loop—put in effort, see results.

Around the age of 16, I had a realization: life is just like RuneScape. I could level up in real life—get stronger, faster, smarter, more skilled—through deliberate effort. And the more I saw progress, the more it reinforced a sense of agency—a belief that I could shape my reality, rather than just react to it. That mindset helped me overcome feelings of helplessness, anxiety, and self-doubt.

Fast-forward to 2024, and I can honestly say I’m living my dream. I get to share this passion for self-improvement, movement, and growth with my community every single day—and I get to make a living doing it.

Now, there’s more I could share about myself, my journey, and how I got here. But this isn’t just about me—it’s about you. It’s about how we can move forward together. If you want to know more, you’ll have to ask me face-to-face.

What I do

Willem, a functional fitness coach, performing a heavy sandbag carry to develop strength, stability, and endurance at Functional Fitness Eltham
Functional fitness

Lifting sandbags, pushing sleds, swinging hammers, you name it. All in the name of function -- in the name of moving better throughout life

Willem, a martial arts coach, executing a precise kick during a kickboxing training session, focusing on movement efficiency and power at Functional Fitness Eltham
Martial Arts

Started with Judo when I was six, followed by Chinese kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Systema, Muay-thai Kickboxing and Aikido -- a bit of everything.

Participants at Functional Fitness Eltham engage in a "Carry and Connect" event, collaborating in exercises that involve carrying weighted sandbags, fostering teamwork and functional strength
Community group

We meetup every Saturday at 7 AM to carry weights and move sleds with a chat half-way -- usually about kids and our partners

Pay it forward. Whatever I achieve through fitness I share with the kids by being an example for them during class.

Eltham Martial Arts Academy requires lots of attention behind the scenes, this is where I come in. Yes, this also includes cleaning the toilets.
